Chloe Greechan of Jersey and Gaya Jayaweera of Sweden combined for a historic achievement during the two teams' clash at the Women’s T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier Division 2 on Thursday (May 29).
Sweden faced off against Jersey in the penultimate match of the 2025 Women's T20 World Cup Division 2 Qualifier. Batting first after winning the toss, Sweden got off to a slow but steady start, reaching 60-0 after 10 overs, having been 23-0 after five.
Greechan, a 24-year-old left-arm orthodox spinner, opened the bowling for Jersey. She bowled three overs for 0-11 in the first nine overs of Sweden's innings, before returning for the 20th. By then, Sweden had reached 126-4. After a wicket and two singles off the first three balls, Greechan took three more off the last three balls of the innings, removing Zara Mohammad, Gaya Jayaweera, and Hareer Chamto to claim a hat-trick and finish with figures of 4-13 from four.
Jersey started poorly in the run-chase of 129, losing 3-22 by the fourth over. Jayaweera, a 40-year-old right-arm seamer, came on to bowl in the 16th over when Jersey needed 37 off 30 with only four wickets in hand. With her first three deliveries, not only did Jayaweera effectively kill the chase, but also achieved a first in the history of international cricket, across genders. She dismissed Annabel Mossop, Nia Greig, and Kate Follain to complete the second hat-trick of the match: both coming from bowlers on opposite sides.
Jayaweera then also removed No.11 Olivia Bastin to bowl Jersey out for 110 as Sweden won by 18 runs. She finished with figures of 4-11 from two overs.
Have two hat-tricks ever been taken in the same international match?
This is the very first occurence of two bowlers from opposite teams taking hat-tricks in the same international match, across formats and genders.
Multiple hat-tricks in a match by the same bowler has been achieved once before in international cricket.
Jimmy Matthews of Australia took a first-innings hat-trick dismissing Rolland Beaumont, Sid Pegler, and Tommy Ward of South Africa in a Test match in 1912, before following it up with another hat-trick in the second innings where he took the wickets of Herbie Taylor, Reggie Schwarz, and Ward.
Overall, Greechan's was the 50th and Jayaweera's the 51st hat-tricks in women's T20Is. Greechan's T20I numbers now read 56 wickets from 42 games at an economy of 3.37, while Jayaweera, who only made her debut earlier in this tournament, has four wickets to her name from four games.
Greechan, in fact, has the second-best economy rate for any bowler with more than 50 wickets in women's T20I history: only Wayan Sariani of Indonesia is above her with 58 wickets at 3.20. Jayaweera, on the other hand, holds the record for being the first Swedish female cricketer to make her international debut aged more than 40.
How does the Europe Qualifier work?
Six teams - Germany, Isle of Man, Italy, Sweden, Jersey, and Spain - participated in Division 2 of the Europe qualifiers. Italy and Germany finished as the top two sides and have qualified for Division 1, which already includes Ireland and Netherlands and will be held in August.
The top two teams from Division 1 will then qualify for the Global Qualifier, where they will meet with regional qualifying teams from the Asia, Africa, Americas, and East-Asia Pacific Qualifiers.
Finally, the top four teams from the Global Qualifier will join the eight teams that have already qualified at the 2026 Women's T20 World Cup in England.
