The ICC updated their player rankings following a technical issue which saw Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli excluded from the ODI rankings.
On Wednesday (August 20), the ICC updated their men's player rankings, as per a scheduled weekly update. This change saw Proteas spinner Keshav Maharaj re-take the No.1 spot among ODI bowlers, with other notable changes in the batting and all-round rankings as well.
Curiously, there appeared to be a glitch in the ODI rankings in particular as two players, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who were ranked in the top four as per the last update, were missing from the top 100 altogether. Players are usually only excluded from the rankings once they retire. These two in particular have retired from both T20Is and Tests, but remain active in the ODI format.
Naturally, this led to some confusion over why their names had been removed, when no other players seemed to be affected. The T20I and Test rankings were also unaffected.
However, it soon appeared that there were other issues in the rankings; the opposite way. Several players had re-appeared in the rankings despite retiring, or last playing in the ODI format over a decade ago. Steve Tikolo, Alex Obanda, Thomas Odoyo, Anshy Rath, Faf du Plessis, Babar Hayat, Jason Roy and Tanmay Mishra were a few examples.
Wisden.com reached out to the ICC, who clarified that "a number of issues in this week’s rankings are currently being investigated."
Not long after, the technical issues were resolved, and the rankings were restored with the inactive players removed and Rohit and Kohli both occupying the same spots as last week. The correct tables are published below.
