Archie Vaughan bowls playing for England U19s

Somerset all-rounder Archie Vaughan bowled a devastating spell to India U19's top order in the ongoing youth Test in Beckenham today (July 14).

The young spinner took three wickets in 10 overs in India's second innings, with his figures reading 3-14 at stumps, as England U19s looked to close the gap to the tourists. In a run-laden game, India racked up 540 in their first innings – in which Vaughan, the son of Ashes 2005-winning captain Michael Vaughan, returned figures of 2-108 off 17 overs – before England scored 439 in theirs. Vaughan opened the batting and was dismissed for 2 by Henil Patel.

India U19's second innings got off to a flying start, with 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi once again finding the boundary early. He and fellow opener and first innings centurion Ayush Mhatre took the score to 74-0 at the end of the 10th over, with Suryavanshi on 44 off 30. However, Vaughan struck with his second over into the attack, getting Mahtre caught on the square leg boundary.

His next victim was Suryavanshi, who reached his half-century off 39 balls before he also holed out to Vaughan for 56. That wicket left India U19s 109-2, with their scoring rate slowing from its earlier pace.

Vaughan completed a trio of wickets before the end of play by getting Maulyarajsinh Chavda in his penultimate over of the day. Just like the other two, Chavda was another catch in the deep, looking to slog over the leg side boundary. He was out for 3 off 11 balls, and India U19s finished the day on 128-3.

Having started his professional career primarily as a top-order batter, Vaughan has emerged as a promising all-rounder. He regularly plays a key role with the ball for Somerset, operating alongside Jack Leach in the County Championship. His emergence has proved problematic for England Test spinner Shoaib Bashir, who struggles to get in the Somerset side with both Leach and Vaughan making up the spin attack.

Vaughan also took figures of 6-19 in his last Test appearance for England U19s, against South Africa earlier this year.
