Queensland held the upper hand in their Sheffield Shield match against Victoria despite heroics from Sam Elliott and David Moody.
Sam Elliott, David Moody bowl out Queensland
Queensland were bowled out for 149 after Peter Handscomb won the toss and opted to field at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Despite losing Usman Khawaja for 19 and Marnus Labuschagne for 10, they reached 74-1 largely because of opener Hugo Burdon’s 43.
However, Sam Elliott – son of former Test opening batter Matthew – broke through, trapping Labuschagne leg-before and then having Burdon caught. Fergus O’Neill’s double strike at the other end left the visitors reeling at 87-5.
Wicketkeeper Jimmy Peirson chipped in with 25, but a triple strike from David Moody – nephew of World Cup 1987 and 1999 winner Tom – took out three wickets. No.10 Mitchell Swepson hit out to remain unbeaten on 22, but Elliott returned to take the last two wickets to finish with 4-43 to go with Moody’s 3-24 and O’Neill’s 2-25.
Victoria look at record low
Queensland, however, hit back through new-ball bowlers Michael Neser (3-9) and Tom Straker (2-24), reducing the hosts to 11-5 in 11.5 overs. At this point Victoria were facing the ignominy of getting dismissed for the lowest Sheffield Shield total (the record is still South Australia’s 27 against New South Wales in 1955/56).
Handscomb pushed the score, but Victoria were 27-6 when Hayden Kerr struck. O’Neill (13) helped Handscomb add 21 for the seventh wicket before falling to Jem Ryan: at stumps, Victoria were 61-7 with Handscomb (25) and Elliott (7) at the crease.
Victoria have averted their lowest total in the Sheffield Shield, but they may still be bowled out for their lowest total in the tournament in nearly a century.
