Pavan Rathnayake bats with the tail to make double ton
Choosing to bat first after winning the toss, Colombo stitched regular partnerships on day one which saw them reach 319-7 by close of play. Nishan Madushka made 94 opening the innings, while Dhananjaya de Silva scored 64. Rathnayake came out to bat at No.5, and was unbeaten on 83 at stumps.
He assumed control on the second day, adding a mammoth 200-run eighth-wicket stand with Chamindu Wijesinghe, who provided able support with his 141-ball 65. In the course of this partnership, Rathnayake notched up his second first-class double hundred, reaching there off just 203 balls.
He was eventually dismissed for 221, having hit 18 fours and seven sixes. His rearguard effort took his side from 319-7 to 561.

Rathnayake's maiden double hundred had come two years back for Dambulla District against Jaffna District, where he had made 240 off 401 balls. Interestingly, during that knock as well, Rathnayake had stitched a 200-plus partnership with Wijesinghe, who had scored 130.
This double hundred takes Rathnayake's tally of first-class centuries to 14 from just 62 games, and his first-class batting average beyond 50 – from 48.87 to 51.
While Rathnayake is yet to play a Test for Sri Lanka, he made his ODI and T20I debuts last year. From four ODIs, he averages 48.50, having hit one hundred, while from 12 T20Is, he averages 29.55 and strikes at 147. He was also part of the 2026 Men's T20 World Cup squad, where he made 205 runs from seven games at a strike rate of 154.
