Leicestershire Foxes batter Rishi Patel smashed six sixes off a single over in a friendly clash with minor county Staffordshire today (May 8), in a comprehensive victory for the Foxes.
The game was the second of two played between the sides today at Grace Road, with Leicestershire currently on a rest week in the County Championship. Leicestershire's side featured most of their usual faces, including the likes of international cricketers Rehan Ahmed and Logan van Beek.
Batting first, Patel opened up with Sol Budinger, who rapidly reached a half-century. By the time Budinger was dismissed by Jacob Garlick, he had blasted 60 off just 20 balls, hitting 11 of those for boundaries. Patel set about catching up, peppering the boundary line. In one over, he advanced to hit down the ground and over the rope, switching to target the leg side off the next ball before hitting back over the bowler's head again. He cleared the boundary off every single ball, hitting six sixes from the over.
Patel was eventually dismissed four runs short of a century, having hit 96 off 40 balls. Leicestershire finished on 300-7 from their 20 overs. The game does not have official T20 status, but there have been only three higher scores in official men's T20 cricket.
Called up to the Lions in late 2023, Patel is rated as one of the more promising batters on the circuit, having rejuvenated his career since moving to Grace Road from Essex. His 96 continued a feast-or-famine start to an injury-interrupted season in which he has made scores of 0* (while injured), 1, 0, 105 and 0.
In response, Staffordshire were reduced to 12-5, with Walker and Sam Wood doing the bulk of the damage. By the end of the 10th over, they'd further fallen to 37-7, with Nos.8 and 9 Sam Atkinson and Jack Hammond at the crease. They eventually succumbed to 50 all out, losing by 250 runs.
