At the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi, Bangladesh were sent in to bat after Sri Lanka skipper Charith Asalanka won the toss. Nuwan Thushara took the new ball, and after five dot balls in a row, struck by castling Tanzid Hasan with an inswinger off the final ball of the opening over.

From the other end, Dushmantha Chameera continued to keep things tight, following up Thushara's wicket maiden with three more dots. Off the fourth, Parvez Hossain Emon attempted a booming drive only to nick through to the keeper. New batter Towhid Hridoy then blocked the last two deliveries of the over, making it back-to-back wicket maidens to start the innings.

Bangladesh start batting innings with consecutive wicket maidens

This marked the first time that Bangladesh had fallen to 0-2 in a men's T20I. It was also just the ninth occurrence of a Full Member side being reduced to 0-2 in a men's T20I.

But Bangladesh were the only one of these nine sides to play out consecutive wicket maiden overs. In 2010, Zimbabwe played two maidens against the West Indies, but lost only one wicket across the two overs. The majority of Full Members that have become 0-2 lost both their wickets in the first over.

Pakistan nearly became the first Full Member to suffer this fate against New Zealand earlier this year. After the first over in Christchurch was a wicket maiden, they lost another wicket in the second without scoring, before taking a single off the final ball.

Sri Lanka then continued to strike, reducing Bangladesh to 11-3, 38-4 and 53-5 before Jaker Ali (41*) and Shamim Hossain (42*) helped them scrape together 139-5.
