Matthew Wade scores 10th List A century off 65 balls

After Mitchell Owen single-handedly gave Tasmania a blistering start with a 20-ball fifty, the team faced a mini collapse, slipping to 135-4 within 20 overs. However, Wade, coming in at No. 6, ensured Owen’s effort did not go to waste.

Together with Australia Test all-rounder Beau Webster, he stitched together a 101-run partnership. When Webster was dismissed for 81 off 95 balls, Tasmania were 236-5 after 32.5 overs. Wade continued to bat aggressively, bringing up his century off just 65 balls. He reached the landmark by edging a delivery from spinner Callum Stow for four while attempting to muscle it to the on side. His 68-ball 105 contained eight fours and six sixes.

That was his first century since October 2023, with his previous one also being a score of 105, against Queensland in the same competition. Overall, it was his 10th List A hundred. Former Punjab cricketer Nikhil Chaudhary also made a 49-ball 67 from No.7 as Tasmania put 381 on the board, and were bowled out with three balls left in the innings.

This was the 12th time in the history of Australia's One-Day Cup that a team scored over 380 runs. Tasmania still hold the tournament record for the highest total: 435-9 against South Australia in 2023.

Wade juggles playing and coaching responsibilities

Wade, now 37, retired from international cricket last year. The pinnacle of his career came with his part in Australia's maiden T20 World Cup win in 2021. His most notable innings was an unbeaten 41 off 17 balls against Pakistan in the semi-final, which included three consecutive sixes off Shaheen Afridi to seal a thrilling run-chase.

Soon after his international retirement, he swiftly transitioned into the Australian coaching set-up for their T20I series against Pakistan in November last year. He was also part of the coaching staff during their 5-0 T20I whitewash of the West Indies in June 2025. This year, he also served as the Gujarat Titans’ assistant coach in the IPL, having played 12 out of his 15 IPL matches for the franchise; 10 of those came in their 2022 title-winning campaign.

Having retired from first-class cricket after Tasmania’s runners-up campaign in the 2023-24 Sheffield Shield season, Wade still actively plays in the other domestic formats. After being part of Hobart Hurricanes' maiden BBL-winning campaign, his most recent T20 stint was in February during the Sharjah Warriors’ playoff run in the UAE’s ILT20.
