Biography

Timothy Nielsen is a former wicket-keeper batsman who played State cricket for South Australia. A right-handed batsman, he played more than 100 first-class matches for his state between 1990 -99. He was an excellent wicket-keeper and overtook Barry Jarman’s record with 316 dismissals.

Nielsen retired from cricket in 1999 and quickly took up coaching. Starting with South Australia, he went on to assist the then coach of the Australian national team, John Buchanan, following which he became the head coach at the Centre of Excellence in Brisbane in 2005. Buchanan stepped down from his post after giving Australia his second World Cup win in 2007, leaving place for Nielsen to fill his shoes. Nielsen’s contract was due to run till the Ashes series of 2009, but was further extended for a period of two years. However, during his tenure, the Aussies lost the Ashes for two consecutive years, and also failed to retain their World Cup title. Nielsen finally resigned from his post in 2011, following Australia's successful campaign in Sri Lanka that involved an ODI series and a Test series win.
