Charles Bannerman scored the first hundred in Test cricket in the first ever Test match. It was also the first hundred of his first-class career. It was one of seven instances before the Wars that a batter did this. Between the wars, Test selection became more structured: as a result, the maiden Test centuries of only two batters were also their maiden first-class hundreds.
