Left-handed batters were unusual in the early days of Test cricket. Until the end of 1890, only 10 left-handers had batted in the top six, and of them, only William Scotton had played more than three Tests.

In the 20th century, Clem Hill raised the bar by holding the world record for most Test runs for more than a decade. It was not until the late 1930s, in the last years before the Second World War, that Eddie Paynter became the first left-hander to score a double ton (he hit two, in fact).

When the 250-barrier broke, it was with a score of 365 not out, at that point the highest individual score in Test cricket. Since then, that world record has been held solely by left-handers.
