England captain Stanley Jackson won all five tosses at the 1905 Ashes. This did not go down well with Joe Darling, his Australian counterpart, who was not amused when Jackson was named home captain for the Scarborough festival match after the series. Darling arrived at the English dressing-room wrapped in a towel: he wanted the toss to be decided by a bout of wrestling. It did not materialise, largely because Jackson agreed on the condition that George Hirst, the owner of a very strong physique, would replace him at the toss.

As per the Laws, the toss and the exchange of the team sheets is where a game of cricket starts. If a game is abandoned after the toss, it still counts as a “match” in the career aggregates of all 22 cricketers. Its importance in cricket cannot be overstated. Naturally, there are numerous anecdotes around the flip of the coin.
