On December 26, 2004, a tsunami devastated parts of the Indian Ocean coasts. To raise funds, the ICC arranged for the World Cricket Tsunami Appeal, two 50-over games between an Asian XI and a Rest of the World XI. Eventually, only the first of these was played, on January 10, 2005 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The ICC gave this match (and the other game that did not take place) ODI status. Shane Warne had retired from ODIs after being receiving a one-year ban (thereby missing the World Cup) in 2003: he returned to ODIs for this one-off encounter. Warne’s was one of many comebacks by a former cricketer.
