There is some truth in the old adage of fast bowlers hunting in pairs. While some giants of the sport have succeeded in isolation, it has often taken a pair to get the most out of both. Over the decades, new-ball pairs have been key to the success of the strongest sides in the history of Test cricket.

It is important for these pairs to last for a team’s sustained success. Many of these fast bowlers complement each other, and their numbers improve while playing alongside their new-ball partner. In the earlier days when hotel rooms were shared, new-ball pairs were often allocated the same rooms for them to get acquainted with each other.
