A group of volcanic islands in the South Atlantic Ocean, Tristan da Cunha is a British overseas territory that can be reached from Cape Town by sea. Lewis Carroll’s brother Edwin were among the pioneers of cricket in the islands. Cricket had begun to fade away there when Alan Waters, an official, got cricket kits delivered from England. The first cricket match in a decade in Tristan da Cunha was played in 1995.

“Perhaps the day may not be far distant when Ethiopia will be challenging England and Australia to Test matches,” said legendary Australian wicketkeeper Bert Oldfield during his trip to the country in the 1960s. Oldfield had been carrying a cricket bat, a gift for the Ethiopian emperor Halie Selassie, from Australian prime minister Robert Menzies.
