Following on in the Sydney Test match of 1894/95, England had managed to avoid the innings defeat but could set a target of only 177. Australia, 113-2 at stumps, were firm favourites. But things changed overnight as the rain came lashing down. England left-arm spinner Bobby Peel was a master on a wet wicket of “stiff black soil” that dried as the sun came out. Unfortunately, Peel had five teeth extracted before the Test, and after an ordinary game and little to look forward to, lay in his room, stone drunk.

Captain “Drewy” Stoddart sprung into action. He put Peel under a cold shower. “Give me the ball, Mr Stoddart, and I’ll have t’boogers out before loonch,” announced a rejuvenated Peel.
