In September 2015, the PCB formally announced the launch of a new franchise-based league Pakistan. The first edition of the Pakistan Super League was played in 2016, in the UAE, with five teams.

The PSL soon expanded to six teams and, remarkably, all six teams won the league once each by the seventh season. The 2026 edition, its 11th season, saw the addition of two more teams and the first ever player auction in PSL history. Over the years, the PSL has functioned as a stepping stone for young Pakistan cricketers for the next level by providing them the opportunity to share field and dressing-rooms with local and international stars.
