The WACA opened in 1890. In the era of long voyages, travelling teams would often dock at Perth and play a game against Western Australia before heading eastbound, by land or by sea. However, it was not until the 1970/71 Ashes that the WACA hosted a Test match. The venue quickly earned the reputation of being one of the fastest-paced Test cricket venue (if not the fastest), encouraging both fast bowlers and stroke-players.

From the 2018/19 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the Perth Stadium (Optus) replaced the WACA as Perth’s primary cricket stadium. The new venue also hosts football and rugby as well as non-sporting events. Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Eminem, and Taylor Swift have all performed there.
