Afghanistan's Rahmanullah Gurbaz (R) plays a shot as Bangladesh's wicketkeeper and captain Litton Das reacts during the Asia Cup 2025 Twenty20 international cricket match between Afghanistan and Bangladesh at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi on September 16, 2025

Bangladesh have beaten Afghanistan in Tuesday’s (September 16) Asia Cup clash to keep their tournament hopes alive: here's the updated Asia Cup 2025 points table after AFG vs BAN match.

Batting first, Bangladesh made a solid start, reaching 87-1 in the first 10 overs. However, their innings lacked the much-needed late impetus, as they managed just 67 runs in the next 60 balls while losing four more wickets. Tanzid Hasan (52 off 31) was the top-scorer for Bangladesh, while Noor Ahmad (2-23) was the pick of the Afghanistan bowlers.

In response, Afghanistan stuttered in their powerplay, managing just 27-2 and lost their half their side with the score on 77 by the 13th over.

Azmatullah Omarzai, who scored a 21-ball 53 against Hong Kong, gave the chasing team some momentum. However, he fell for a 16-ball 30 right after hitting a gigantic six off Taskin Ahmed in the 16th over, with Afghanistan slipping to 109-6. Captain Rashid Khan (20 off 11) also chipped in. Needing 21 from the final over, Noor Ahmad hit two sixes in three balls to give Afghanistan a chance, but fell short by eight runs in the end after being bowled out off the last ball. Mustafizur Rahman (3-28) was the top wicket-taker for Bangladesh.

Updated Asia Cup 2025 points table after AFG vs BAN

Bangladesh, despite suffering huge loss against Sri Lanka, keep their Super Fours hopes alive with this win. A loss would have eliminated them, with Afghanistan and Sri Lanka qualifying from Group B.

The result means the Afghanistan-Sri Lanka fixture on Thursday (September 5) will be crucial for determining the Super Fours lineup from Group B.

A loss for Afghanistan will see Sri Lanka and Bangladesh go through. If Afghanistan win, all three teams (Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh) will still be in contention, with the decision coming down to net run rate. In this case, Bangladesh would be at a disadvantage due to their inferior NRR.

Hong Kong are already out of the tournament, having lost all three of their matches.
