Pakistan batter Saim Ayub set an unwanted world record during the Asia Cup Super Fours match against Bangladesh, getting out for this fourth duck in the tournament.
Saim Ayub's Asia Cup misery extends
Put in to bat first in a virtual knockout game, Pakistan lost an early wicket when Sahibzada Farhan sliced a full ball to point in the first over, bowled by Taskin Ahmed. The dismissal brought Ayub to the crease at No.3. The left-hander was demoted for the India game in the Super Fours after making three consecutive ducks in the first round of the tournament as an opener.
Having fared marginally better against India (21) and Sri Lanka (2) in the Super Fours, Ayub was back to his disappointing ways, falling for another duck against Bangladesh. He holed out at mid-on, looking to target the off-spinner Mahedi Hasan in the powerplay, as Pakistan slipped to 5-2 in the second over. Their innings went from bad to worse when Fakhar Zaman was dismissed as well after a painstaking 13 off 20 balls in the seventh over to leave them 29-3 after seven.
Ayub creates unwanted world record
This was Ayub's fourth duck in the Asia Cup, making him the first player from a Full Member nation to record four scores of zero in a single men's T20I series - bilateral or multilateral.
Seven players from Associate nations have had the same run previously, with the latest such instance belonging to Ouattara Djakaridja of Ivory Coast at the T20 World Cup Sub Regional Africa Qualifier Group C 2024-25. However, none of those seven players from Associate teams batted in the top six for any of their scores of zero, making Ayub the first top-order batter in men's T20I history to get dismissed for zero four times in the same tournament.
Four other players have made three ducks in a men's T20I series before, with one of them being Ayub's teammate Hasan Nawaz, who had an extraordinary start to his T20I career earlier this year, making three ducks and a hundred in his first series in New Zealand.
