Ishan Kishan, holder of the fastest ODI double-century, came agonisingly close to a dream debut century for Nottinghamshire, falling for 87 on Day 2 against Yorkshire in the County Championship.
After the first eight rounds of County Championship matches (concluded on May 26), the season resumed on June 22. Ahead of the latest fixtures, several teams have bolstered their squads with overseas signings, including India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan.
Kishan, who featured in India’s ‘A’ tour against England Lions before the ongoing India-England Test series, was signed by Nottinghamshire for a two-match stint.
Kishan made an immediate impact on his County Championship debut against Yorkshire. After Nottinghamshire opted to bat first, a 90-run opening stand between captain Haseeb Hameed (52) and Ben Slater (96) laid a solid foundation. However, the innings stuttered slightly after Hameed’s dismissal, with Nottinghamshire losing five wickets for 163 runs.
The momentum shifted when Kishan came to the crease at No. 6. The Indian wicketkeeper-batter launched a counter-attacking knock, propelling Nottinghamshire into a commanding position.
Resuming overnight at 298-6, Kishan raced to his maiden Championship fifty off just 57 balls, reaching the landmark with eight boundaries. He continued his aggressive approach, adding 37 more runs off 41 with four fours and a six, appearing destined for a debut century. However, his charge was halted by Dom Bess in the 107th over when he hit a shot straight to mid-wicket. Yorkshire had progressed to 354-7 by the time of his dismissal.

Kishan battles to revive India career after BCCI snub
Kishan ranks among India’s most talented wicketkeeper-batters in this current generation. Though he has played only two Tests (averaging 78.00), his ODI record stands out: 42.40 average and 102.19 strike rate across 27 matches, highlighted by his record-breaking 210 off 131 balls against Bangladesh (2022) – the fastest double-century in international cricket history.
In T20Is (32 matches), he averages 25.67 with a 124.37 strike rate, including a 2021 T20 World Cup appearance. The 26-year-old also boasts strong age-group credentials, having captained India to the 2016 U19 World Cup final, a campaign Rishabh Pant was also a part of.
Kishan last represented India in a T20I against Australia in November 2023. After making himself unavailable for domestic cricket, he was dropped from the BCCI's annual central contracts list and subsequently lost his place in the national side. However, the latest BCCI contract saw Kishan's name being included.
