Jamie Smith scored scored a battling century for Surrey on the final day of their opening round of the 2026 County Championship, keeping Surrey afloat at Edgbaston.
Jamie Smith tons up for Surrey
His innings came after a surprise promotion to No.3 for the fixture, which is Smith's first outing since the final Ashes Test of the winter in early January. Ben Foakes took the gloves for Surrey over Smith as normal, while Ollie Pope was carded at No.4. Smith nicked off for nine in the first innings, but shone in the second after Surrey conceded a deficit of 216 following a maiden first-class ton for Dan Mousley.
After losing both Rory Burns and Pope within five overs of each other in the second innings, Smith stepped up with a battling century to keep Surrey in the fixture on the final day. Having reached a half-century and been not out overnight, Smith went into lunch on 84* before reaching his century in the afternoon session. He brought up three figures off 199 balls, his first for Surrey since he was called-up for England for the first time in 2024. Having batted Surrey well past the 100-run lead, Smith finally departed for 132 off 261 balls.

England spare batter race revs into gear
Smith is one of several batters vying for England Test contention, as well as those in the hunt for the gloves. Somerset wicketkeeper-batter James Rew also scored a century against reigning champions Nottinghamshire, recording his 12th first-class hundred by the age of 22.
Smith's hundred was scored as part of a 217-run partnership with Dan Lawrence, who also scored a century in Surrey's second innings at Edgbaston.
In the first innings of the Surrey-Warwickshire match, Ben Foakes scored 128 after a top-order collapse, putting on a rear-guard stand with No.8 Tom Lawes. Pope was out for 20 and 16 in the first and second innings respectively.
