Vaibhav Sooryavanshi slammed a scintillating 55-ball ton in the U19 World Cup final against England on Friday, February 6, breaking several records on the way.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi breaks multiple records in 175-run knock
Sooryavanshi hit his first hundred of the ongoing U19 World Cup in the final against England, driving India to potentially a big first-innings total. He took only 55 balls to reach the landmark to take the fourth spot on the list of quickest Youth ODI centuries, and second-fastest in U19 World Cup history.
The 14-year-old also broke Unmukt Chand’s record of the highest score in a men’s U19 World Cup final. The former India U19 captain had scored 111* in the 2012 final against Australia to lead his side to a six-wicket win. Notably, he now features thrice in the top five of quickest YODI tons, and four times in the top 10.
His 175-run innings was also the sixth-highest knock in U19 World Cups, and second-highest for India in YODI history after Ambati Rayudu's 177* against England in 2002. It ranks ninth on the all-time list for highest Youth ODI scores.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi blows England away in final blitz
Sooryavanshi, meanwhile, wasn’t his usual self to start with, hitting three fours and a six to get to 24 off 24 by the penultimate over of the powerplay, where he proceeded to slam left-arm pacer James Minto for three fours and a six to take 18 runs off it.
The teenager then took the attack to off-spinner Farhan Ahmed, milking him for six sixes and a four across three overs to get to 96 off 51, before completing a 55-ball hundred. This was his fifth youth ODI hundred, and the first in U19 World Cups.
Sooryavanshi only built on the fiery start, slamming his next 50 runs in just 16 deliveries. He added another 25 runs in eight balls before perishing for 175 off 80, with India well placed at 251-3 in the 26th over. He hit a mind-boggling 15 fours and 15 sixes in his knock – his 150 runs in boundaries alone would have broken the record for highest score in an U19 World Cup final.
