On Wednesday (May 14), the IPL announced an updated set of rules for player replacements.
The league had come to a halt on May 8, midway through the Punjab Kings-Delhi Capitals fixture, due to tensions along the India-Pakistan border.
After a few days of military action between the two countries, a ceasefire was reached and the league confirmed that action would resume from May 17, a gap of nine days.
Foreign player availability has been affected for the remainder of the league, with safety concerns understood to be the inhibiting factor for them to return to the country.
IPL modifies player replacement rules after league suspension
As reported by Cricinfo on Wednesday, the extraordinary circumstances have led the league to modify the rules around player replacements.
Earlier, teams were allowed to sign a player from the list of those unsold at the auction, in case one of their current squad was ruled out due to injury, international commitments or any other reason approved by the BCCI. These signings had to be made before the team's 12th match of the season.
In light of the current situation, IPL teams are now allowed to sign players as temporary replacements even after their 12th game, with one catch. Any players signed after the league was suspended will not be available for retention for next season. Those signed before the suspension remain eligible for that.
Delhi Capitals sign Mustafizur Rahman as temporary replacement
On the same day the rule was modified, the league announced that Delhi Capitals had signed Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman as a replacement for opener Jake Fraser-McGurk, who would not be returning this season.
There are 13 league matches, and four playoff games remaining this season. No team has mathematically secured qualification for the top four yet. The remainder of the season will be played at six venues – Bengaluru, Jaipur, Delhi, Lucknow, Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
