Urvil Patel picked by CSK

Chennai Super Kings have announced the signing of Urvil Patel as a replacement player for IPL 2025

On Monday (May 5), two days ahead of their clash against Kolkata Knight Riders, CSK made a squad update announcement.

CSK squad udpate: Urvil Patel replaces Vansh Bedi

Gujarat wicketkeeper-batter Urvil Patel, who holds the record for scoring the fastest hundred in T20 cricket by an Indian - off just 28 balls - has been called up to the CSK squad as a replacement for Vansh Bedi.

Bedi, an uncapped wicketkeeper-batter just like Patel, was picked up at the auction for INR 55 lakhs. He did not play a game in IPL 2025, but a ligament tear in his left ankle meant he had to replaced.

Patel, who went unsold at the IPL 2025 auction, has been signed up by CSK at his base price of INR 30 lakhs.

Urvil Patel's record run in SMAT 2024-25

Patel had a phenomenal run in the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. After being snubbed in the IPL auction, Patel first hit a record 28-ball hundred for Gujarat against Tripura before scoring another in within a week, this time off 36 balls.

In the process, he became the first batter in T20 history to make two hundreds under 40 deliveries. Patel finished the season with 315 runs at a strike rate of 229, the highest for anyone with more than 150 runs in the season.

CSK have had to make multiple replacement signings through the season, including that of Dewald Brevis, who replaced Gurjapneet Singh, and Ayush Mhatre, who replaced captain Ruturaj Gaikwad.

They are currently at the bottom of the points table and are already out of the playoffs race.
