SRH and KKR suffered identical defeats on the first two nights of the 2026 IPL. They put up reasonably big scores that turned out to be inadequate when they came out to defend. While that may partly be attributed to the conditions, there was little doubt over the thinness of both attacks.
KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane has recovered from his injury and is fit to play. While that is good news, the question mark over Cameron Green’s availability as a bowler continues to loom. Both men batting in the top three will not solve KKR’s biggest problem: in an attempt to pick too many top-order batters, they ended up compromising on bowling. Their two star spinners, Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy, looked insipid in the Wankhede Stadium the other night. However, both have excellent records at home, and KKR will count on not one but both of them to drive that advantage home.
SRH’s power-hitting is at least as dangerous and deep as KKR’s, but their bowling is arguably weaker. They may want to leave out Liam Livingstone – he is probably one power-hitter too many – for Eshan Malinga to boost their bowling attack (Brydon Carse is still uncertain), though that may turn out to be a redundant exercise if the Eden Gardens roll out a spinners’ pitch. In that case, they may bring in one of their two young left-arm wrist spinners, Shivang Kumar or Krains Fuletra.
