They started the day at 424/3 and with a sensational second Test double-century. Conway remained unbeaten at lunch with 224 runs, having anchored the innings with 28 fours and showing remarkable composure even after being dropped on 206.

New Zealand declared near the third session, hoping to make amends with the new ball and with overcast conditions but their bowlers were all over the place. Zakary Foulkes was hit for a few lusty boundaries. Jacob Duffy tried his best but he too leaked runs along with Michael Rae. Tom Latham was reluctant to bowl Ajaz Patel and brought him into the attack eventually, but with both the openers in good touch, negotiated him very well.
