The 2025 Ranji Trophy match between Assam and Services in Tinsukia got over within the first session of day two (October 26), lasting just 90 overs.
Riyan Parag's career-best 5-25 goes in vain
Batting first, Assam were bundled out for 103 in the first innings. Two Services bowlers, Arjun Sharma (5-46) and Mohit Jangra (3-5), took a hat-trick each, marking the only instance in first-class cricket where two players have achieved the feat in the same innings.
Assam bounced back despite making a meagre total, thanks to IPL star Parag's exploits with the ball. Parag spun a web around the Services batters with his off-spin, taking the second five-wicket haul of his career. He finished with a career-best 5-25, aided by Rahul Singh (4-44), having opened the bowling. Services were bowled out for 108.
The trend of low scores continued in the third innings, as Arjun starred again with 4-20 to skittle Assam for 75. Parag, who made 36 off 31 in the first innings, managed only 12 off 14 in the second. With a five-run first-innings lead, Services were asked to chase just 71, which they did comfortably in 13.5 overs with eight wickets in hand. Parag (2-31) was the only Assam bowler to take wickets in the second innings.
Has there been a shorter Ranji Trophy match?
The clash lasted 90 overs, a mere 540 balls. After 25 wickets tumbled on day one, seven more fell in the first session of day two. The match's rapid pace, unusual for a first-class game, was reminiscent of the proposed hybrid format Test Twenty backed by AB de Villiers. This innovation, an amalgamation of Test and T20 cricket, would see each team bat twice in four innings of 20 overs each, combining elements from both formats. The Assam-Services game, by contrast, lasted an average of 22 and a half overs per innings.
According to The Indian Express, this match is the shortest in Ranji Trophy history in terms of balls bowled, breaking the previous record of 547 balls set in the 1961-62 match between Delhi and Railways.
The shortest recorded first-class match was between Faisalabad and Karachi Blues in the 2004-05 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, which lasted just 85 balls as Karachi Blues forfeited mid-way through their first innings.
The shortest first-class match in which all four innings were played was between Tasmania and Victoria in 1851, which lasted 352 balls (88 overs - overs used to be of four balls each back then).
540 balls and 32 wickets! Assam and Services play out the shortest completed #RanjiTrophy match (as per available records) by balls in Tinsukia within four sessions.

The only game that finished in a day in Ranji history remains to be the inaugural Madras-Mysore game in 1934.
