Prithvi Shaw wasn't picked in IPL 2025

Prithvi Shaw slammed a 36-ball 66 on his captaincy debut for Maharashtra in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy to add to a brilliant 2025/26 domestic season so far.

Prithvi Shaw impresses on captaincy debut

Shaw was appointed Maharashtra captain for remainder of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025/26 league phase after Ruturaj Gaikwad joined the India ODI side for the South Africa series. Gaikwad led Maharashtra in their first game of the season – a five-wicket defeat to Jammu and Kashmir – before leaving for Ranchi.

Shaw, opening the batting in a 192-run chase against Hyderabad in their second league game, completed his fifty off 23 deliveries and finished with 66 off 36, hitting nine fours and three sixes.

He added 117 runs for the first wicket with Arshin Kulkarni in a little over 12 overs to put Maharashtra on track to complete the chase. Kulkarni went on to score a 54-ball 89, while Rahul Tripathi hit a quickfire 26 off 11 to take the team through.

Shaw moved to Maharashtra ahead of the ongoing domestic season after lining up for Mumbai in 2024/25. In the last edition of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he could only score 197 runs in nine innings at a strike-rate of 156.34. He was also dropped from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad mid-season due to fitness issues.

However, since joining Maharashtra this term, he has hit a purple patch. He started with a 75 against Kerala in the Ranji Trophy, before slamming a double century against Chandigarh, the third-quickest 200 in Ranji Trophy history. An odd failure against Saurashtra was then followed up with twin half-centuries against Karnataka and Punjab, respectively, making him the state side’s top-scorer in the Ranji Trophy 2025/26 season after five rounds (470 runs at 67.14, SR 92.33).

Once considered among the most talented young batters in the country, Shaw made his India debut as an 18-year-old in 2018. But he hasn’t featured for the team since 2021 after playing five Tests, six ODIs and a T20I.

He also went unsold in the 2025 IPL auction after last featuring for Delhi Capitals in the 2024 season.
