South Africa youngster Dewald Brevis extended his purple patch with a 21-ball fifty on his T20 Blast debut for Hampshire on Friday (May 30).
Brevis secured a contract with Hampshire in late March for the T20 Blast and two County Championship matches. He was a key contributor to MI Cape Town’s maiden SA20 title, finishing as the sixth-highest run-scorer (291). No one hit more than his 25 sixes in the competition.
He carried this form into the CSA 4-Day Series Division 1, where, playing for the Titans, he entered the final against the Lions on the back of rapid scores of 148, 99, and 80. However, he was dismissed for a duck in the first innings, followed by 26 off 28 balls in the second. Nonetheless, his performances mark a sustained resurgence after a period of relative obscurity since his breakout at the 2022 Under-19 World Cup.
Brevis brings red-hot form to T20 Blast
Making his T20 Blast debut for Hampshire against Essex at Southampton on Friday, Brevis didn't take long to get going. After captain James Vince (62 off 31 balls) and Toby Albert laid a strong foundation with a 97-run opening stand in 8.4 overs, Brevis capitalised, adding 80 more with Albert in just 6.5 overs.
Albert fell for a 34-ball 54, but Brevis powered on. Having smashed a fifty off 21 balls, he finished with an explosive 68 off 32, including six sixes and four fours. Having earned a long-awaited international recall recently, Liam Dawson chipped in with a late cameo of 19* off six from No. 7, propelling Hampshire to 230-7.
Essex were bundled out for 124 in 16.2 overs, with Brevis contributing in the field as well, taking two catches off Scott Currie’s bowling. The knock extended his rich vein of form: since the start of SA20 2025, he has now amassed 584 runs at an average of 44.92 and a strike rate of 185.39.

Brevis had entered the match on the back of consistent IPL performances for Chennai Super Kings, with scores of 52, 42, and 57. The South African youngster scored 225 runs at an average of 37.50 and a strike rate of 180, emerging as one of the few bright spots in CSK's otherwise disappointing campaign this year – his performances suggested the franchise might have unearthed a future star worth investing in.
