Salman Ali Agha’s hundred against Bangladesh might have gone in vain, but it helped him equal a national record.
Salman Agha hundred goes in vain as Bangladesh clinch series
The first two ODIs of the three-match series were one-sided games where the winning side bowled out the other for 114. In the decider, Bangladesh posted 290-5 as Tanzid Hasan Tamim scored their only fifty-plus score and Haris Rauf claimed 3-52.
The Bangladesh fast bowlers – Taskin Ahmed (4-49), Nahid Rana (2-62), Mustafizur Rahman (3-54) – then reduced Pakistan to 17-3 and then 82-5. A match after his bizarre run out had attracted controversy, Agha took the attack to the opposition camp. He added 79 with Saad Masood, 48 with Faheem Ashraf, and 52 with captain Shaheen Shah Afridi to take Pakistan close to a win.
En route, Agha reached his third ODI hundred, all of which have come while batting outside the top four. In the process, he equalled Mohammad Yousuf’s national record of scoring three hundreds while batting at No.5 or lower.
The world record for most ODI hundreds while batting at No.5 or lower belongs to Jos Buttler, who has made eight three-figure scores, while MS Dhoni, David Miller, and Yuvraj Singh are tied at the second spot with seven tons each.
Agha eventually skied one off Taskin for a 98-ball 109 that included nine fours and four sixes. Shaheen kept the fight on with two sixes in the 49th over, but Rishad Hossain defended 14 in the last over to seal the match and series.
