India white-ball batter Tilak Varma recorded a duck in his first-ever One-Day Cup outing today (August 5), playing for Hampshire against Glamorgan.

Varma signed up for Hampshire earlier this season, marking his first entry into county cricket in the UK. He played four games in the County Championship, racking up two hundreds and a fifty.
However, the start to his One-Day Cup stint hasn't been as smooth.

Hampshire, playing their first match of the tournament against Glamorgan, were put into bat after losing the toss. After getting off to a good start, opener Ali Orr was dismissed for 45 off 44, bringing Varma to the crease at No.3. The Indian left-hander lasted only three deliveries, edging a back-of-length ball by Ned Leonard to slip, where Asa Tribe took a brilliant diving catch to his left.

No.4 Joe Weatherly was dismissed cheaply too, falling for 5 off 16 balls, while No.5 Tom Prest could only manage seven runs of as many deliveries. From 115-4, Nick Gubbins and Ben Mayes stitched a rescuing partnership for Hampshire, taking them past 200 without the loss of any further wicket at the time of writing.
Varma is currently ranked third on the ICC T20I batting rankings. Having made his debut in the format in 2023, he has played 25 matches so far, and has phenomenal numbers - averaging 49.93 and striking at 155.07. He has also played four ODIs, but is yet to make a mark, with 68 runs at 22.66.
Overall, in List A cricket, Varma averages 46.68 from 36 innings and 52.06 from 22 first-class matches. He is yet to represent India in Test cricket.
