Angelo Mathews scored his first century since his Test retirement, while playing for the Colts Cricket Club, to extend his purple patch in red-ball cricket.

Angelo Mathews turns back the clock with red-ball domination

Taking on Burgher Recreation Club in the Major League Tournament, Mathews scored 144 runs to take his side to a commanding first-innings total of 463. The century comes after a series of high scores in the tournament, with knocks of 96*, 93, 63 and 48* in the lead up to the century.

Mathews walked in at No. 5 following Dinesh Chandimal’s dismissal, who scored a 68-ball 67, with Colts CC at 132-3. The all-rounder lost captain Dhananjaya Lakshan (44) just more than five overs later before adding 72 important runs with Muditha Lakshan (39), who was the fifth wicket to fall.

Muditha Lakshan then joined hands with Mathews to steer the team towards a huge total. The duo finished day one unbeaten, with Colts CC well placed at 325-5, and the all-rounder just 12 short of a hundred. While Manoj completed his fifty, Mathews brought up a 33rd first-class hundred in the first session on day two.

Though the all-rounder lost Manoj after a 124-run partnership, he held on, adding another 68 runs with Akila Dananjaya to take the team’s total well past 400, and fell six short of a 150. Colts CC could score just three more runs following Mathews’ dismissal to finish the innings at 463. Left-arm pacer Yasiru Rodrigo picked up a five-wicket haul for the Burgher Recreation Club.
