Tagenarine Chanderpaul bats for West Indies in a Test match

West Indies have named their squad for their upcoming Test series against India, including recalls for Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Alick Athanaze.

Three changes have been made from the squad which was comprehensively defeated by Australia last month. Left-arm spinner Khary Pierre has been given a maiden call-up, while Chanderpaul and Athanaze have been brought in to strengthen an unstable batting lineup.

Pierre is the second specialist spinner in the squad, alongside vice-captain Jomel Warrican, and has been selected off the back of a strong performance in the West Indies Championship. He took 41 wickets – more than any other bowler – and averaged 13.56 across the season. Gudakesh Motie, meanwhile, has been rested for the series, to allow him recover ahead of a busy white-ball schedule.

Chanderpaul's recall is the most eye-catching news from the squad. Son of legendary West Indies batter Shivnarine Chanderpaul, the opening batter made his Test debut in 2022 against Australia, impressing with a half-century on debut. He scored a double-hundred against Zimbabwe in 2023, but didn't pass 50 in his following 10 innings. He was replaced by Mikyle Lewis at the top of the order for West Indies' series in England last year. Lewis has scored 369 runs in 10 Tests since, and has been dropped following the Australia series.
