Latest cricket news for August 21
Amir gets to 400 T20 wickets
Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir reached 400 wickets in T20 cricket during last night's CPL match between Trinbago Knight Riders and Antigua and Barbuda Falcons, becoming the ninth bowler to get to the landmark. He also became the fourth-quickest, achieving the feat in 343 games. The record belongs to Rashid Khan, who took his 400th wicket in just his 289th match.
Rizwan to play CPL
Pakistan ODI captain Mohammad Rizwan has signed with St Kitts and Nevis Patriots for the remainder of the CPL 2025 season. Rizwan has never played in the CPL before and was recently ignored for the Pakistan squad for the Asia Cup, allowing him a free window to play the Caribbean Premier League.
England name Women's World Cup squad
England became the second team after India to announce their squad for the 2025 Women's World Cup. Former captain Heather Knight returns after being sidelined due to injury. Opener Danni Wyatt-Hodge has also made a comeback, and so has leg-spinner Sarah Glenn. The squad has four frontline spin options and multiple part-timers to go with them. Shardul Thakur set to become new Mumbai captain
Ajinkya Rahane announced that he's stepping down from captaincy for Mumbai ahead of the 2025-26 domestic season on Thursday (August 21) morning. That was followed by reports suggesting Mumbai Cricket Association are set to announce Shardul Thakur as his replacement. Thakur has already been named as captain for West Zone for the Duleep Trophy and was part of India's Test squad for the England tour recently.
India unveil policy for sporting engagements v Pakistan
The Indian government's Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has put forth a policy regarding sporting engagements with Pakistan that has all but secured the future of the India-Pakistan match(es) at the upcoming Asia Cup.
"In so far as bilateral sports events in each other's country are concerned, Indian teams will not be participating in competitions in Pakistan," the policy reads. "Nor will we permit Pakistani teams to play in India. With regard to international and multilateral events, in India or abroad, we are guided by the practices of international sports bodies and the interest of our own sportspersons... Accordingly, Indian teams and individual players will take part in international events that also have teams or players from Pakistan. Similarly, Pakistani players and teams will be able to participate in such multilateral events hosted by India."
Sri Lanka name ODI squad for Zimbabwe tour
Sri Lanka have announced their squad for the ODI leg of their upcoming tour of Zimbabwe. Uncapped batter Pavan Rathnayake has been called up, while Nuwanidu Fernando has earned a recall. Wanindu Hasaranga has not been picked.
