Greg Chappell thinks England will possess the edge over Australia as the two sides head into the much-anticipated Ashes later this year.
England, who haven’t won the Ashes since 2015, are experiencing a transformative period, especially in Test cricket. Led by several young prospects and empowered by an identity under captain Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum that has thrilled and entertained, they will be confident about their chances of regaining the Ashes which has belonged to Australia over the last four series.
The likes of Harry Brook, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse and Gus Atkinson are either dominating the landscape of world cricket or starting to break into the first team with plenty of noise. The distinction in evolution is stark compared to Australia, for whom Sam Konstas has been the only player under 30 to compete in the decisive last couple of Tests against Australia, the distinction in evolution starts to become clear.
Greg Chappell: England looks equipped to dominate for a generation
Australian legend Greg Chappell has highlighted England’s successful rebuilding process: “As the cricketing world looks towards the next Ashes series in Australia, the narrative has shifted in a way few would have predicted a couple of years ago,” he wrote in his column in The Sydney Morning Herald.
“England, under the bold and transformative leadership of Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum, are not just rebuilding, they are surging ahead with a team that looks equipped to dominate for a generation.”
Chappell also discussed the role that Stokes and McCullum have had in transforming the mindset of English cricketers. Their approach on the cricket field is more fearless than before, and it promises to be a recipe for success going forward.
“Under Stokes and McCullum, the focus has shifted from cautious consolidation to fearless expression,” observed Chappell. “England are no longer playing to survive, they’re playing to win, and they’re building a team capable of sustaining success for years to come.
“Crucially, this rebuild isn’t just about talent, it’s about a mindset shift. England’s players, regardless of experience, are encouraged to embrace risk and take the game to the opposition. The result is a team that doesn’t fear failure, but thrives on pressure.”
Chappell was also critical of Australia for not being able to tap into the talent pool and producing players to usher in a transition. While the likes of Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc continue to dominate world cricket, they are not getting any younger; and their partner-in-crime Josh Hazlewood’s recent battles with injuries are an indication that change is needed.
Chappell believes that dismantling the high-performance system and entrusting the state teams with player development was a catastrophic decision that set Australian cricket 10 years back.
“For Australia, the challenge is clear: adapt or risk being left behind. The Ashes have always been a battle of skill, nerve, and mindset. On current form, England appear to hold the edge. The stage is set for a humdinger of a series that could redefine the balance of power in world cricket,” Chappell signed off.
