Shree Charani has taken the top spot in the latest ICC Women’s T20I rankings on the back of a great T20 World Cup campaign so far.
Shree Charani takes top spot after dream World Cup start
The India left-arm spinner had achieved her career-best rating of 728 in the last update of the women’s T20I rankings and climbed five spots to go second behind Linsey Smith. That rise had come on the back of a three-wicket haul against Pakistan in India’s tournament opener.
Charani followed it up with a brilliant spell of 4-19 against the Netherlands in another big win. And though India went down to Marizanne Kapp’s brilliance against South Africa, the young spinner picked up another three wickets, including a sharp caught-and-bowled of Laura Wolvaardt.
Ten wickets in three matches enabled Charani to go top of the rankings and also achieve her career-best rating of 753, just under a year from her T20I debut. She picked up a career-best haul of 4-12 in her maiden game against England at Trent Bridge on June 28 last year, and now has 38 wickets in 23 matches in the format at 16.55 each, and an economy rate of 7.32.
Linsey Smith, meanwhile, has dropped from first to third, having taken three wickets in three World Cup games so far. Her teammate Charlie Dean has gained two spots to go second, with five wickets in three games, and completing the England spin trio is Sophie Ecclestone, who has moved up four spots to fourth after seven wickets in the campaign. Sadia Iqbal, up by two places, completes the top five with five wickets in the World Cup. Lauren Bell and Deepti Sharma fell by four and three places, respectively.
