Shan Masood took over as Test captain after Babar Azam resigned from all formats in the aftermath of the 2023 World Cup. Since then, Masood led in 16 Test matches until, in July 2026, the selectors reinstated Babar as captain.

Masood led Pakistan to four wins and 12 defeats. Two of these wins came in the England series of 2024/25 at home, when Pakistan won consecutive Test matches after trailing in the series. The other two also came at home, against the West Indies in 2024/25 and against South Africa in 2025/26.
