When the second day’s play ended at The Oval on that day in 1889, Surrey still needed 25. Yorkshire needed two wickets (one, technically, for the injured Maurice Read would not bat). At a quarter past six, it was near-dark, but both sides agreed to continue on a pitch illuminated by gas lamps on the streets around the ground. Surrey won the match 45 minutes later.

The contest, usually referred to as the “Gas-lamp game,” is the first known instance of cricket under artificial lights. Cricket has come a long way from there: these days, it is difficult to come across day-only matches in limited-overs cricket between major nations.
