The Second World War had already brought competitive cricket to a halt in England, but Lord’s hosted some fundraising games that also helped boost public morale. Test cricketers enrolled in the armed forces often played these games. In one of these, in 1944, Bob Wyatt (then flight officer) came to bowl at Jack Robertson (lieutenant) when everyone heard a German doodlebug. The players flung themselves on the ground and the crowd took cover. The aircraft fell outside the venue.

Cricket has had its share of aviation connections. Air travel made the world smaller over time. Without it, the cricket calendar would have borne a vastly different look today. The many franchise leagues would almost certainly not have been possible. There is even an Aviation Premier League these days!
