Days after setting South Africa's highest T20I score, Dewald Brevis hit three straight no-look sixes in the series decider against Australia on Saturday (August 16).
Brevis, having made a quick start (26 off 18 balls), put his foot on the accelerator in the 10th over, smashing three no-look sixes – something that’s fast becoming his signature despite his nascent career. Aaron Hardie bore the brunt of his assault.
The third ball, a hip-high length delivery, was pulled into the night sky. The fourth, another slower ball, disappeared over long-on and out of the ground. Off the fifth – a cross-seam delivery outside off – Brevis swung through the line, launching it over long-off.
To rub salt in the wound, the final ball of the over, short and wide, was carved over deep point, just clearing Nathan Ellis at the rope. Brevis reached his fifty off 22 balls, his second of his career in the format.

Something extraordinary was needed to stop Brevis in a dangerous mood, and Glenn Maxwell answered the call with a stunning catch in the 12th over. Facing a short ball outside off from Nathan Ellis, Brevis pulled it hard towards wide long-on, but Maxwell covered significant ground to his right, stretching full length to complete a spectacular catch.
Brevis' innings ended in a blistering 26-ball 53, featuring one four and six sixes. Four of those sixes travelled over 100 meters, with the longest measuring 120 meters. The youngster has now hammered 14 sixes in the series - the most ever hit by anyone against Australia on their home soil. Remarkably, Virat Kohli (the next-best) needed eight more matches than Brevis to hit 12 sixes against Australia in Australia.
Brevis' whirlwind fifty came four days after a 41-ball maiden international hundred, South Africa’s second-fastest T20I century. His unbeaten 125 off 56 balls also became the highest individual score by a South Africa batter in T20Is.
Brevis' departure saw South Africa slip to 110-4 in 11.4 overs. Rassie van der Dussen (38 not out off 26) guided the team to a competitive 172-7 in the three-match series decider. This match marks a crucial opportunity for South Africa, whose last T20I series victory against Australia dates back to 2009 - though they did win a one-off T20I encounter in 2018.
