Teenage Indian sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been named Bihar’s vice-captain for the upcoming Ranji Trophy season.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi named Bihar vice-captain
In January last year, Suryavanshi became one of only nine players in the history of first-class cricket to make his debut at the age of 12. Just five matches into his first-class career for Bihar, he has been named vice-captain of the state side and will deputise for captain Sakibul Gani in Ranji Trophy 2025-26.
The appointment comes after Suryavanshi contributed to India Under-19's successful tour of Australia. He played a significant role in the tourists' 3-0 one-day series win, scoring 124 runs at an average of 41.33 and a strike rate of 112.72. He then began the subsequent Youth Test series with a 78-ball century and went on to become India's second-highest run-getter in their 2-0 victory.
Before that in July, Suryavanshi starred with the bat on India U19's tour of England, hitting a 78-ball 143 – the fastest century in Youth ODI history. In April, he had become the youngest IPL debutant at 14 years and 23 days. Later that same season, he went on to score a 35-ball hundred, the second-fastest in IPL history.
Last season, Bihar had a torrid Ranji Trophy campaign, losing six out of their seven matches. They are placed in the Plate League for the 2025–26 season and will start their campaign against Arunachal Pradesh on October 15 in Patna.

Ranji Trophy squad updates: Priyansh Arya earns maiden call-up
In other squad news, 24-year-old Delhi opener Priyansh Arya received his maiden Ranji Trophy call-up. Arya impressed during his debut IPL season for Punjab Kings this year, scoring 475 runs as they finished runners-up. The season also sees Prithvi Shaw switching from Mumbai to Maharashtra.
Punjab have appointed Naman Dhir as their captain. Dhir, a 25-year-old batting all-rounder, was part of his side’s 2023-24 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title-winning campaign and has represented Mumbai Indians in 23 IPL matches so far.
Meanwhile, India's T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav wasn't included in Mumbai’s 16-member squad for their campaign opener against Jammu and Kashmir from October 15. However, as the Times of India quoted Mumbai Cricket Association secretary Abhay Hadap, Suryakumar’s exclusion was because his availability wasn't confirmed, not because he was dropped.
