Scott Edwards plays a sweep shot batting for the Netherlands

Netherlands captain Scott Edwards smashed a rare double-hundred in a T20 game playing Australian grade cricket on Thursday (December 11).

Scott Edwards hits 229* in Australian grade cricket T20

Edwards was representing Altona Sports Cricket Club in Victoria, playing in round four of the T20 Div One Clenzo Group Shield against Williams Landing SC. Opening the batting, Edwards hit 11 off the first over, before really hitting his straps in the fourth over of the innings, hitting three boundaries off fast-bowling all-rounder Prince Chouhan. He reached his half-century shortly after with back-to-back sixes, having faced 23 balls.

At the halfway point of the innings, Edwards was one runs away from completing a remarkable century. He lost his opening partner, former Melbourne Stars player Lachlan Bangs, before he reached three figures, however, with their partnership having taken Altona to 150-0 in the 11th over. Edwards reached his hundred with a single three balls after Bangs' dismissal. First grade cricket isn't recognised as an official T20, so the innings doesn't count as his maiden T20 hundred.

Edwards continued to pile on the runs, and his 150 came up in the 17th over of the game. It was in that over that Edwards put his foot on the accelerator to power Altona to a huge finish. He hit 14 boundaries in the final four overs of the innings, 12 of them sixes. Having been 212-2 at the end of the 16th over, Altona finished on 304-2 with Edwards unbeaten, carrying his bat to 229* off 81 balls, with 14 fours and an astonishing 23 sixes. His strike rate read 282.71.

Although this was not an official T20 match, Edwards' score would have surpassed Chris Gayle's record score in a T20 by a mile if it had. Gayle's 175* has stood as the record in a men's T20 since 2013. Edwards' highest official T20 score is 99 and he yet to score a professional hundred in any format.

Altona went on to win the match by 186 runs after bowling Williams Landing out for 118 – just over half of Edwards' individual score. Altona sit in second in the Div One Clenzo Group Shield Standings, while Williams Landing are fourth out of six.
