Jayden Seales takes 7-34 before match abandoned due to dangerous pitch

The West Indies Championship match between Leeward Islands and Trinidad and Tobago at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound was abandoned due to a dangerous pitch on day three. The contest’s last ball, bowled by Seales, bounced steeply to hit Leewards’ No.9 Jeremiah Louis on the helmet, who was enraged and even kicked his helmet away. He was later stretchered off the field.

Leeward Islands batted first in the game and were bowled out for 131 within 40 overs. Karima Gore (57) was the only batter to score more than 20 runs as Anderson Phillip picked up a six-wicket haul. Seales took three. Jyd Gooless (51) and Joshua Da Silva (36) then put up a fight for Trinidad and Tobago to give them a 44-run lead. Kelvin Pitman took six wickets, while Oshane Thomas took three.

Seales gave his side a great start with the ball in the second Leeward innings, picking up two wickets in the fifth over of his first spell, during which he also went on to complete a seventh career five-for in first-class cricket. Leeward were reduced to 43-5 in the 17th over, still trailing by a run with over a day’s play left in the game.

Opener Mikyle Louis (73) and wicketkeeper-batter Jahmar Hamilton (41) then put on an 82-run stand to put their side back ahead, before Seales returned for a second spell to dismiss Louis before the end of the second day's play. He then got the better of Hamilton upon restart on the third day, leaving him just three away from a 10-wicket haul in the innings. Only 11 more deliveries were possible after Hamilton’s dismissal, however, with the pitch showing signs of deterioration during the day’s play.
