Eng U19 v IND U19: Ayush Mhatre bowled first ball

Over the course of Alex French’s 12-ball over, India U19 captain Ayush Mhatre was bowled for a golden duck in the second Youth ODI against England in Northampton today (June 30).

England U19 captain Thomas Rew won the toss and opted to field in the second game, at Northampton. French began the day with a most singular over. His first two balls were massive wides down the leg-side. Mhatre made no attempt whatsoever at playing these.

However, French altered his line and pitched the next ball – the first legal delivery of the match – on the stumps. It ran through Mhatre’s defence and knocked the off-stump out of the ground.

Vihaan Malhotra played out the rest of the over. The sequence (after the initial wide, wide, wicket) read dot, wide, dot, dot, wide, dot, wide, wide, four – in other words, a 12-ball over that went for 10 runs but yielded a wicket.

As Malhotra stayed put, Suryavanshi went after the bowling at the other end, smashing a 34-ball 45 before Jack Home claimed his wicket. At the time of writing, India U19 were 94-2 in 17 overs with Malhotra (28 in 40 balls) and Maulyarajsinh Chavda (11 in 27) at the crease.
