Maharashtra were eliminated from the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025 after falling on net run-rate in a four-way tie on points in their group.

Prithvi Shaw-led Maharashtra caught in brutal four-way tie

Maharashtra, led by Prithvi Shaw, were part of Group B of SMAT 2025 with Hyderabad, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Goa, Chandigarh and Bihar. Every team played the other once in a round robin format. After seven rounds, the top two games – Hyderabad and Madhya Pradesh – qualified for the Super League.

While Hyderabad topped the group rather easily, winning five of their seven games, the second spot was contested among four sides with the same number of points. MP, Maharashtra, Goa and J&K finished with 16 points each, having registered four wins apiece.

But MP, led by Royal Challengers Bengaluru captain Rajat Patidar, qualified for the next round on a superior net run rate. They finished with a NRR of +0.935, while Maharashtra missed out with a NRR of +0.063. Goa and J&K had respective NRRs of -0.013 and -0.538.

Maharashtra had gone into their last league game against Goa knowing a big win, coupled with MP’s defeat to J&K, could get them through. While they did win by 15 runs, MP’s 13-run defeat to J&K wasn’t enough to tilt the NRR race in their favour.

MP have now been put in Group A in the Super League, alongside Andhra, Punjab and Jharkhand. Group B features Hyderabad, Haryana, Rajasthan and Mumbai. The top two teams from each group will face off in the SMAT 2025 final on December 18.

How Prithvi Shaw fared in the SMAT 2025 season

Shaw, sidelined from the international set-up for almost four years now, moved to Maharashtra ahead of the 2025/26 season. He had a stellar first half of the Ranji Trophy season – 470 runs at 67.14 with a double ton and three fifties – and was handed T20 captaincy when Ruturaj Gaikwad was called to India’s ODI team for the South Africa series.

Gaikwad left the Maharashtra camp after the first game of the SMAT season. Shaw started his captaincy stint in style but couldn't build on it, finishing with 183 runs in seven innings at a strike rate of 161, with two half-centuries.
