Australia squad for South Africa series

Australia have announced their squads for the ODI and T20I series against South Africa, with all-rounder Mitchell Owen getting a maiden call-up in the 50-over format.

Mitchell Owen earns maiden ODI call

Australia will host South Africa for three T20Is and three ODIs between August 10 and August 24, for which they have named separate 14-member squads. Mitchell Owen, who recently made his international debut in the T20I series in West Indies, has earned a place in the Australia ODI squad for the first time.

Owen was outstanding with the bat in the finisher's role in the five T20Is in the Caribbean, scoring 125 runs at a strike rate of 192.30, including a debut fifty that equalled and broke some records. He also took two wickets with his right-arm seam.

The T20I squad for the South Africa series sees several changes to the one that toured West Indies. Jake Fraser-McGurk, Aaron Hardie, Cooper Connolly and Xavier Bartlett have been left out, while Travis Head and Josh Hazelwood both returned after having skipped the West Indies T20Is. Left-arm spinner Matt Kuhnemann, who debuted in T20Is alongside Owen, has also kept his place.

Australia's last ODI assignment was at the 2025 Champions Trophy. Among those who featured in that squad, Fraser-McGurk, Connolly, Hardie, Sean Abbott, Tanveer Sangha, and Spencer Johnson have not been picked for the South Africa ODIs. Right-arm quick Lance Morris, meanwhile, has earned a recall, having last featured for Australia in November 2024, and so have Head and Hazlewood.
