Watch: A front-row spectator at Darwin’s TIO Stadium stole the show during Sunday’s (August 10) Australia-South Africa T20I, snagging a one-handed screamer off Tim David’s six – all while clutching two beer cans in his other hand.
The incident happened in the 13th over of Australia's innings. Corbin Bosch targeted David’s body, and the batter swivelled to hit the ball over the deep square leg fence. As the ball sailed over the fielder in that region, a spectator nonchalantly plucked it out of thin air with his left hand while holding two beer cans in his right. The ball was travelling flat, and he flinched for a moment upon contact but still managed to balance himself and hold onto the catch with his left hand.
"Two cans in the right hand, the Kookaburra on the left, cool and casual," quipped a commentator. "That bloke in the field might help us in the World Cup," he added.
David hit 83 off 52 in Australia's total of 178, as they were bowled out off the last ball. Kwena Maphaka (4-20) became the youngest Full Member seamer to take a four-wicket haul. South Africa’s chase had two major contributors – Ryan Rickelton (71) and Tristan Stubbs (37) – and their efforts weren’t enough, as they fell short by 17 runs. Josh Hazlewood (3-27) put the brakes on the innings to seal the win for Australia, who now take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. This marked Australia’s ninth consecutive win, following their recent 5-0 clean sweep against West Indies.
